Imaging the lung in motion

XV Technology takes a unique approach to imaging lung function. Using existing hospital imaging systems, X-ray images are taken simultaneously, from different acquisition angles. Using image-processing methods adapted from aerospace engineering, the motion of the lung tissue is measured. From motion, ventilation is calculated at each stage of the breath and at every location within the lung. The ventilation measures are then visualized as a colored heat-map to identify ventilation deficits.

A new lung imaging modality

Our unique, proven algorithms combine this information to reconstruct the flow of air throughout all airways of the lung. Because it uses images from a very limited number of angles, the radiation dose is dramatically lower than a CT scan, which typically requires imaging from hundreds of different angles. This also means that scans are captured quickly, in just a few seconds – in the time it takes to take a breath.

XV Technology operates with a higher sensitivity than any non-invasive competing modality without contrast agents.

Uniquely suited to translational medicine

The limitations of existing respiratory diagnostics within a clinical setting, also apply to research.

When studying lung disease in small animal models, researchers are limited by the diagnostic tools available to them. The development of promising new therapeutics are being impaired by a lack of investigations that are sensitive enough to demonstrate efficacy.

A lot of studies fail when moving from preclinical, to clinical, human research. Typically this also requires a change in modality, from histology to CT. But not with XV Technology.

XV Technology delivers truly translational capabilities by allowing you to use the same modality when moving from preclinical to clinical trials.  Additionally, instead of needing to sacrifice samples for histology at each time point, ex vivo XV Technology means significantly fewer animals are required for longitudinal studies.
