Spirometry. X-ray. CT scan. For decades, these have been the best practice modalities for detecting lung disease.
While each provides important insights, they often detect anomalies too late for patients to receive effective treatment.
CT & X-ray can only image the structure of the lung. From these images, specialists attempt to infer lung function, or in the case spirometry, give an averaged, global measurement of airflow.
But with lung disease, functional changes in tissue resistance and compliance are known to occur well before structural changes are detected.
Lack of modal sensitivity means that loss of lung function is not detected until disease is significantly advanced. This eliminates the possibility of early detection, diagnosis or preventative treatments.
